President's Report for 2018

It with much pleasure that I present my report for 2018 a year of significant achievements and changes to the way we operate. This year was one of the best program of films ever presented  by the Dubbo Film Society. This included our program of Sunday evening films as well as for the fourth time, the Latin American Film Festival. We also partnered with local film maker Kellie Jennar in a special  “Director’s” presentation of “Sweet Country” earlier in the year. A total of 27 films for the year were presented!

  Each year the Committee strives to select a film program that combines the freshness of non mainstream cinema while still having general appeal. I believe we achieved this goal but the members are the proper judge of that and the Committee is therefore always receptive to feedback to assist with future film selection. Certainly, the feedback that was received was positive, so the Committee will continue to strive to strike the right balance in curating the  program of films.The films screened during the year included;

The Dubbo Film Society once again hosted the 14th Latin American Film Festival over two weekends in October around the time of the DREAM Festival. This year the LAFF was included as an event within the DREAM Festival and my thanks go to Anne Field for allowing us to participate in the Festival this year. This year the curating embassy was the country of Mexico who curated a program of 13 films. The festival was presented  in DRAMA, the new black box theatre at the Western Plains Cultural Centre. Special thanks to Andrew Glassop for once again sponsoring the venue for this year. The Dubbo Photo News also provided generous advertising for this event and my thanks to Tim Pankhurst for this support which was greatly appreciated.  My thanks goes to the tireless efforts of the Committee in working very hard to ensure that the Festival was a success.

This year our Committee included two extra members, Kellie Jennar and Erifili Davies who have brough valuable social media and other IT communication skills to the Committee. Kellie and Erifili’s involvement with the Dubbo Film Makers has enabled our respective groups to collaborate to mutual benefit. An example of this included the screening of “Sweet Country” where Director Warwick Thornton came to Dubbo to present his film. The Film Society was pleased to be able to sponsor the venue for this prestigious event organised by Kellie Jennar and proved to be a resounding success and very pleasing to see the DRTCC packed for the event.

Each year the Film Society receives tremendous service from its providers and special thanks go to Linda Kristof and her staff at the Dubbo Regional Theatre and Convention Centre and  to Kris Gersbach at Westhaven Industries who again this year provided the printing and postage service for our mail outs.

Finally, and most importantly a very special thanks goes to my fellow Committee members for all of their hard work and sharing the responsibility of running the Film Society through what has been an exciting and challenging year. To my executive Deb Haysom, Secretary and film procurement, to Linda Bennewith , Treasurer and Membership, Mark Dwyer, projectionist and film notice production, Kellie Jennar and Erifili Davies for Publicity and Communications and to Joan Kennedy and Noel Conroy for their support.

It is with much pleasure that I present this report for adoption.
